four sa bands

For over two weeks SA’s rock and indie bands have been submitting their entries in the hopes of being selected as a Vodacom Open The City finalist. After an intense judging session, this year’s panel has chosen the four finalists. And here they are:

The Kiffness

The Plastics

Bye Beneco

Vodacom is now giving the power to you – the music fans – to decide which one of these four local bands will be named Open The City winner and share the stage with Vodacom In The City’s international acts Rudimental, MGMT, Crystal Fighters and The Presets.

Public voting has opened and there are two ways to vote for the band you want to Open The City on 3 October:

  1. Visit, and click to vote for your band (make sure you read the Ts&Cs);

  1. SMS the band’s name to 48477

  • SMS “PHFAT” to 48477
  • SMS KIFFNESS” to 48477
  • SMS “PLASTICS” to 48477
  • SMS “BYE BENECO” to 48477

(Standard SMS rates apply, follow the link in the reply SMS for Ts&Cs).

This year’s judging panel included Rowen Gangulu (Vodacom), Blaise Janichon (Seed Experiences), Sotiris Moldovanos (5FM), and Diane Coetzer (renowned music journalist), who had a tough time choosing the finalists from the impressive list of entries received.

Last year the voting got fierce – and fun – as each band finalist jostled for votes by creating their own “vote for us” videos, memes and heartfelt pleas on social media.

Public who voted before the end of August stood a chance to see the finalists compete in an exclusive event on 5 September at the Open The City Session gig at Town Hall, Newtown.

Space at the Open The City Session is limited – But Vodacom gave fans the chance to win two tickets to the gig simply by voting.

Plus if you have your photo taken at the Open The City Session at one of the Vodacom booths, you could win a chance to be on the exclusive Vodacom VIP Deck at Vodacom In The City. More details at

Voting closes on at midnight on 12 September and the winning band, the one that receives the most votes, will be announced on 17 September.

Open the City is brought to you by Vodacom, headline sponsor of Vodacom In the City 2014, a Seed Experiences event. Follow @Vodacom, @InTheCityJHB and #VITC2014 for all the Open The City news and activity.

About the Open The City finalists

P.H.Fat is a Capetonian rap group made up of Smooth Mike (the voice) and Narch (the beats). Together, they make electro rap tracks that are best played loud. They’re the guys who do things a little differently; they don’t have a record label and they give their music away for free. If you’ve ever seen one of their explosive live shows, you’ll understand why they have over 26 000 Facebook fans and a crowd banging down the doors to get in.

The Kiffness

The Kiffness’ deep, infectious sound was pioneered by passionate sound engineer Dave Scott, who was later joined by his musical partner, Black Norris, a.k.a Mvelo Shandu, who plays bass and drums in the band. The duo’s relationship was harnessed from endless hours of singing in the chapel and playing jazz together at Michaelhouse High School. This unique, melodic electronica will have you hypnotised. Watch out for their instrumental talent and uninhibited dance moves – you won’t regret it.

The Plastics

The Plastics are a quirky, retro rock band that likes to make their friends dress up in gorilla costumes. They make melodic, disco-flavoured rock, peppered with a lot of lyrical genius. In 2008 they released their first EP, The Plastics, followed closely by another one called Kiss The Plastics (2009). Both were distributed for free – because they’re nice like that. Since then, the band has been dishing out hit after successful hit. Their live shows bring with them heaps of infectious energy, fuelled with elation.

Bye Beneco

Bye Beneco is raw, organic and dreamy, with an underlying gypsy-folk, blues spirit. If that sounds confusing, make sure you see them perform as soon as you can. Relatively new to the scene, soft and folky Bye Beneco is fast making a name for themselves as one of the bands you need to see live. They’re known for swapping instruments throughout their set, and delivering tight, clean, swooning vocals that hit you where it matters. Expect a unique, intense energy that is truly palpable – on so many levels.

Sónar Cape Town and presenting partner Olmeca Tequila are proud to announce the first headlining artists for its December edition and introduce a satellite event in Johannesburg:  ‘A Taste of Sonar’ on Friday 12 December 2014, featuring a selection of the international acts set to perform at Sónar Cape Town, including 2manydjs (DJ set) and The Bloody Beetroots (live).

Known as “The City of Gold”, Jo’burg has a reputation for being a fast–paced, urban melting pot of people from various different cultures and backgrounds. A Taste of Sónar will be held at the industrial Nazrec Expo Centre, just south of the city centre, where it will become a meeting place for people from all walks of life to come together and celebrate music.

Having performed at this year’s Sónar Barcelona as well as many previous editions, 2manydjs are no stranger to the Sónar family. They mix an energetic fusion of everything from tech and progressive rock to R&B and funk and are praised for consistently pushing the boundaries of electronic music into new and innovative territory. As brothers they also play as well-known band Soulwax and with James Murphy as Despacio.

Led by Italy’s enigmatic Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo, The Bloody Beetroots are well known for their ability to work any dance floor with hyperbolic tracks and floor-rinsing drops. Following a hugely successful DJ set in Cape Town in 2009, The Bloody Beetroots are returning this year to South Africa to play at Sónar Cape Town and A Taste of Sónar in Johannesburg with their critically acclaimed full live show.

For 21 years Sónar has explored the sonic spectrum and been a large part of the evolution of the electronic music scene by recognizing, developing and showcasing the best talent from around the world. Sónar Cape Town will be no different.

“We are laying the foundations to grow Sónar into an institution in South Africa,” says Seed Experiences Managing Director, Brian Little. “Sónar is a unique festival model and we aim to replicate the Sónar ethos in South Africa and what makes it so successful around the world, within a local context.”

Sónar’s commitment to the South African electronic music scene will also mean a host of established and emerging local talent will have the opportunity to be noticed on an international level and to develop skills on a local level.

“For a good couple of years, Olmeca Tequila has consistently positioned itself as a brand that promotes and supports electronic music in South Africa. We are very happy and excited to be partnering with Sónar to help bring this iconic international festival to South Africa,” says Renzo Puccini, Olmeca Tequila’s SA Brand Manager.

Limited Early Bird Passes are now on sale to the first ticket buyers. The Sónar Professional Accreditation (PRO) option offers access to priority parking, a clock room, free wifi, cellphone chargers and access to an exclusive viewing area and bar at the event.

Sunshine Engage

Beatport Music Services VP and Gareth Cliff  to deliver keynote addresses at music conference Breathe Sunshine Engage

 #DKEXP, #SunShineEngage

Founded by Black Mango.  Partnered by Seed Experiences.

Following the success of two Breathe Sunshine African Music Conference events in Cape Town, Breathe Sunshine Engage (BSE) will take place as a once-off satellite event in Johannesburg on Friday 3 October 2014 at The Market Theatre in Newtown.

This one-day music conference offers attendees an impactful, industry experience featuring local and international speakers, panels and ‘on the couch’ interviews. Aimed at music students, artists, professionals, media and anyone keen on learning more about the industry, the public is urged to purchase their tickets quickly as space is limited. They’re priced at a reasonable R195.00 so that the conference is accessible to everyone.

Delivering the keynote addresses are Terry WeerasingheBeatport’s Vice President of Music Services, along with SA’s maverick radio pioneer Gareth Cliff.

Founded in 2004, Beatport is the largest music download store for DJs in the world, with Terry being one of the most connected and well-respected figures in dance music. Based in Berlin, Terry will address delegates on the boom in dance music worldwide and how Africa can tap into it.  He’ll also outline how the digital retailer is transitioning to a new future whilst highlighting how labels, artists and others can participate in building a global community that makes music available to a broader audience and deepens the relationship between artists and their fans.

As one of the most recognized radio DJ’s on the African continent, Gareth Cliff will talk about the future of radio in South Africa and his experience launching his own online radio portal, CliffCentral.

Recognizing the need for national events that facilitate networking, knowledge-sharing and artist empowerment, the conference comprises various panel discussions aimed at encouraging engagement and collaboration all aimed at building the industry.

Whilst the full agenda is still in development, two panel discussions have been announced:

The Management Vacuum in the African Music Industry: Understanding the management role, what can be done to improve and develop better management skills and how do we attract more high calibre professionals into the game.

Confirmed panelists include: Graeme Gilfillan – Nisa Global Entertainment (PTY) Ltd, Zakes Bantwini – Head of A&R Sony, Raphael Benza – AKA Management, Refiloe Ramogase – Dreamteam Management, Franie Kotze – Clear Entertainment, Amaru Da Costa – Soulistic.

Soul Candi records will present a panel focused on Taking South African House Music Global, touching on themes such as how to compete in a highly competitive international electronic music industry, realizing our true global potential, and empowering artists to prepare them for international success.

Confirmed Panelists include: Black Coffee, Allan Nicoll – Soul Candi, Nomndeni Mdakhi  – Edits Communications (Kalawa Jazzmee), DJ Clock – AM-PM Productions, Jullian Gomes, Kavir Magan – Pulse Radio

The popular ‘on the couch’ sessions will include global speakers, two of whom are renowned international booking agents from the UK’s Coda Music Agency; Paul Buck and James Whitting.  Coda looks after Imagine Dragons, Ellie Goulding, Bastille, Rudimental, Disclosure, The XX, The Vaccines, Bon Iver, John Newman, Jay Electronica, Jamie Woon, Faithless, Macy Grey, Mr Scruff and new teenage sensation Jake Bugg, just to name a few.

With indie rock festival Vodacom In the City (VITC) taking place at neighbouring Mary Fitzgerald Square on the same day, it’s likely that the international contingent in SA for VITC and Rocking the Daisies will make themselves available to attend parts of the conference too.

Seed Experiences, the company behind VITC, Rocking the Daisies and a host of other top festivals, recognized the need to support the industry that supports them.   By partnering with Black Mango, the founders of Breathe Sunshine African Music Conference, the two parties created Breathe Sunshine Engage.

“The African music industry is one of the fastest growing music industries in the world but the continent still lacks the skills and network of our international counterparts. Through our Breathe Sunshine conferences we aim to address these challenges and put South Africa on the map as
a global music hub for African music,” comments Trenton Birch, founder of Black Mango. “With strategic partnerships with Kenyan Music Week, AFRIMA (All African Music Awards – Nigeria), Reeperbahn Festival (Germany), Europe’s largest music conference and CJM (USA), we have opened up an international network with the world’s top global conferences,” concludes Birch.

The team has taken their international alliance one step further by being invited to represent Breathe Sunshine South Africa at Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival in September where they will host two panels and a showcase celebrating 20 years of democracy.

Of course all great initiatives need great partners, so big thanks to SAE Institute and Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) for their support.
