In 2008 their highly anticipated 2nd album, And So It Goes was released and went straight in at number 12 in the UK pop charts and Number 1 in several classical charts around the world.

Savanna Newcomer Showcase

SAVANNA NEWCOMER SHOWCASE SAVANNA NEWCOMER SHOWCASE

In partnership with The Times, Mzansi Magic and Kaya FM 95.9

Be part of the audience as SA’s top comedians come out to watch this year’s up-and-coming comics battle it out for votes at the Savanna Newcomer Showcase on 6 May at the Soweto Theatre.  As part of the build up to the Savanna CCA’s (Comics’ Choice Awards) that takes place in August, this unique comedy showcase kicks off a few months prior and sees all registered comedians in the newcomer category perform a few minutes of stand-up in front of SA’s finest. Why? So the comedy industry knows who to vote for, of course.

SAVANNA NEWCOMER SHOWCASE SAVANNA NEWCOMER SHOWCASE

Voting opens on 25 April and closes on 22 June, so winners aren’t announced on the night, but that’s not the point is it? The point is for the comedy gurus to see them in action before they cast their vote, as this particular category is not open to the public to choose; it’s their peers who decide.

Between 20 and 30 budding hopefuls from across the country, each have five minutes to impress the audience and make them laugh more – and louder – than their comedic comrades. Last year’s inaugural showcase was electric, with routines ranging from hybrid-vernac and Afrikaans to upper-crust English.  Schalk Bezuidenhout received a standing ovation and went on to win the award at the main event, so the heat is on for the newcomers to deliver the performance of their lives. The show lasts about two hours and you’re guaranteed a good time with pioneering stand-up legend Kagiso Lediga as MC.

“You can expect fast-paced, slick deliveries and plenty of improprieties,” comments John Vlismas, founder of the Savanna CCA’s. “The calibre of these beginners will astound you; their material’s fresh, sharp and downright rude but their topics are current and their routines are carried with well-timed wit. Of course there may be one or two newbies who bomb, but in a room full of comedians that’s almost as funny as the guys who are great.”

“We were inspired to create this developmental initiative to give the newcomers the opportunity to shine,” comments Liezl Dippenaar, marketing manager of Savanna. “Our aim is to be totally inclusive; every newcomer’s invited, we’ll even fly in the out-of-towners and put them up for the night.  Ultimately, this is an intimate evening of diversity and world class comedy where the new guys get to hang out with the old guys. We’re proud to be associated with it.”

Watch the press and the Savanna CCA social media for the nominee announcement, which takes place on 25 June 2014.

The Savanna Newcomer Showcase takes place at the Soweto Theatre on Tuesday, 6 May, at 7pm for 8pm.

Sunday 25th May – 11am to 3pm

At the “Old Mill”, Magaliesberg

About This Event

Thirteen years ago, Woodland School in Magaliesberg approached Cellar Rats Wine Tasting Club to assist them with an annual fund raising event, and the Cellar Rats Spring Wine Festival was born. Five years ago we realized that there is no festival in Joburg to showcase the Fortified wines produced in South Africa, so we decided to produce a Port and Sherry festival, which has been renamed as the Port & Red Wine Festival.

Now in its 6th year, the Cellar Rats Port & Red Wine Festival still promotes an ethos of “good living“.

This family festival is held at the historic “Old Mill“, on the banks of the picturesque Magalies River, approx. 40 minutes from Jhb’s Northern Suburbs.  The atmosphere is relaxed and convivial, and several bonfires will be provided around the venue for warming you up once the sun starts setting and for toasting marshmallows.

Our emphasis is on tasting South Africa’s best fortified and red wines in a great outdoor setting. To this end, more than 50 producers will present in excess of 140 products for your enjoyment.

Sunday 25th May 2014 – Gates open at 11h00. The festival runs from 11h00 to 15h00.

Relax and taste these great Fortified and red wines, while your kids have fun in the great outdoors!   Jumping Castles & Supervised Entertainment for children will be available.

Children’s activities

Jumping castle and supervised entertainment for children arranged by Happy Acres, including sport activities; animal & plant displays and much more.

Woodland School

Woodland school is a non-subsidised, non-profit rural school in Magaliesburg. This community run school was established in 1999. Since its inception Woodland School has been able to keep the school fees affordable for the local community by running fundraisers and appealing for donations. The school has a bursary system and at the moment we support a number of children on two different bursary schemes.

The school arranges 3 fundraisers every year. The purpose of these fundraisers is to support the development of the school. Projects we have tackled in the past include building new classrooms, building a new toilet block, equipping a modern computer centre, stocking a library and leveling a sport and athletics field. The school has also been able to buy very good textbooks and readers for the children at the school. All of these projects would have been impossible to tackle without fundraising money. The results of our fundraising has had a major effect on the overall educational experience for the children at our school.

DStv Delicious Festival returns to whip Joburg into a foodies frenzy

Trio of top UK bands confirmed for family lifestyle event

Brand New Heavies, Incognito, Soul2Soul Brand New Heavies, Incognito, Soul2Soul

Three British music acts – jazz-funk pioneers the Brand New Heavies, club favourites Soul II Soul and acid jazz outfit Incognito – will headline this year’s DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival, taking place at Emmarentia Dam on 31 May.

Last year’s inaugural Delicious festival was such a success that this family lifestyle event is back with a delectable bang in 2014.

The DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival, presented in association with Castle Milk Stout, Nedbank, Whirlpool, Mitsubishi Motors and Kaya FM, will again lay on a lavish feast of entertainment and culinary fare, this time in the picturesque setting of the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens.

A blistering line-up of local and international music acts, further details of which will be announced soon, will provide the aural backdrop for a lazy, languid Saturday afternoon of family and foodie-friendly fun and good vibes.

In addition to shopping for gourmet goodies at the artisan food market, visitors can dine in style at one of the pop-up restaurants manned by South African and overseas celebrity chefs, who will be whipping up their signature dishes on site.

When they aren’t busy having a ball in the park-like surrounds of Emmarentia, children will be kept entertained in the kids’ area hosted by DStv, which will include attractions featuring Nickelodeon and Boomerang characters.

And for those who wish to treat themselves to a more exclusive festival experience, the DELICIOUS LOUNGE ARE will play host to a premium bar and a viewing deck over the main stage.

This chilled-out open-air festival attracted some 20 000 visitors to its inaugural event last October, with the combination of scrumptious food and superb music proving a sure-fire winner with the crowds.

The 2014 DStv Delicious Festival promises an even broader kaleidoscope of flavours and experiences, catering for dyed-in-the-wool gastronomes, ordinary food fanatics and those who enjoy savouring

A-grade live music.

VWV Massive is once again producing and promoting this high-end lifestyle festival. “The VWV group have been responsible for some of the biggest events in SA, most notably the FIFA 2010 World Cup opening ceremony, so you can rest assured that the price you pay to attend this world-class event will be worth every cent,” says Lloyd Cornwall, Director of VWV Massive

General admission for the DStv Delicious Festival is R450,  (early-bird tickets sold out already) available from Computicket

For seven million South African school children, their lack of shoes is hampering their ability to get an education. And while no one questions the importance of a good education in escaping poverty and improving job opportunities, the lack of even one pair of shoes can keep children out of school simply because the road is too rough or the weather too cold to walk any distance in their bare feet.

Trinco Tea is doing something about this.  Their newly-launched CSI campaign to 540 schools in Gauteng and the Free State is called ‘Walk a Mile in my Shoes’ and aims to provide school shoes to learners who need them. The Challenge encourages pupils to collect as many empty Trinco Tea packets as possible and bring them to school. The ten schools who collect the most Trinco Tea packets will win R20 000 worth of school/computer equipment. Furthermore the Top 3 of these 10 schools will received a brand new pair of Green Cross school shoes for each of their learners. Teachers are also not forgotten, they too will receive a pair of Green Cross shoes.

To build more awareness of this worthwhile campaign, Trinco Tea will be hosting fun activation’s at various shopping malls in and around the Gauteng and Free State regions, with the first dates confirmed for THABONG SHOPPING CENTRE, SEBOKENG in VEREENIGING on Saturday, 19 and Sunday, 20 April 2014. The public can look forward to great fun, lots of activities, a DJ set and of course many prizes!

The campaign closes at the end of July 2014, after which the top ten schools who collected the most Trinco Tea packets will be announced. This is a great way to support the school children in your area – help them collect Trinco Tea packets! Put your best foot forward and help a school child win a pair of shoes with Trinco the great tasting, great value tea.

About Trinco Tea

Trinco is made from carefully chosen and blended teas from Malawi and Zimbabwe. Available in South Africa since 1979, the African teas from which Trinco is blended are recognised around the world for their consistent quality, invigorating aroma and refreshing taste. Tea plantations are situated in high, humid areas that provide the perfect altitude and weather conditions to produce tender, flavour-filled tea leaves, which are then carefully handpicked. Our tea tasters, skilled to pick up the subtle differences from plantation to plantation, take great care to ensure that only the finest teas are chosen for the Trinco blend. This creates the distinctive, delicious, smooth Trinco taste.

  Cape Town Opera
Cape Town Opera, Africa’s Premier Opera company is pleased to announce its stellar cast for the upcoming production of Show Boat which will be on stage at the Opera House, Artscape, Cape Town for one weekend only from 16 to 18 May 2014, prior to its four-week tour to the United Kingdom. Tickets for the local season are on sale at Computicket.

South Africa has a wealth of talent equal to and in some instances better than international performers who grace the stages of major theatres in Europe, Asia and America.  The positive response by both audiences and critics to the many productions staged locally and internationally by Cape Town Opera is testament to the high levels of qualitative performances our homegrown talent has to offer. Show Boat is no exception. The highly talented 48-member cast and the international award winning Cape Town Opera Chorus is accompanied by the 30-piece Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Albert Horne and at some performances, Gareth Jones.

The multi-talented SA soprano, Magdaleen Minnaar (Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute)  is cast in the principal role of Magnolia.   A recent Kyk-net Fiesta and Fleur du Cap nominee and SAMA winner, Magdaleen Minnaar has entertained audiences locally and across the globe. The role of Magnolia is shared with Robin Botha, who like Magdaleen Minnaar also graduated from the University of Cape Town and interestingly, both singers have played the coveted role of ‘Christine Daae’ in Phantom of the Opera. These two exceptional singers are known for their commanding stage presence and versatile voices that has earned them recognition and awards. Robin Botha received the 2012 Fleur Du Cap Award for ‘Best Actress in a Musical” for her debut as a musical theatre performer in “Phantom”.

The role of Gaylord Ravenal is played by visting Australian tenor, Blake Fisher (Les Miserables, Don Giovanni, La Traviata) and South African born Tim Walton (Evita, Starlight Express, Stephen Ward) who now resides in London. The well-loved melody, Ol’ Man River and the unforgettable character, “Joe” is synonymous with Show Boat and the old American South. This “gutsy” vocal number requires a special deep vocal sound which local singers, Otto Maidi (Show Boat, Winnie The Opera, MacBeth) and Paul Madibeng (La Bohème, Princess Magogo kaDinizulu, Show Boat) accomplish with ease.

Show Boat is directed by well-known award-winning writer, actress and director, Janice Honeyman who works with creative team comprising of assistant director, Shelley Adriaanzen; Timothy Le Roux who returns to Show Boat as Choreographer (he also performed the role of Frank in the previous season of Show Boat); Johan Engels (Set and Costume design); Birrie le Roux (assisting with additional costume design); Mannie Mannim (Lighting Designer) and Marcel Bezuidenhout (Sound Designer).

Created in 1927 with music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Kern’s Show Boat is a large-scale family musical with wonderful operatic songs and colourful jazz numbers played to the sounds of a large orchestra combined with dazzling choreography and 100 stylish costumes to present an evening of great entertainment.

The epic story begins in Mississippi during the 1890’s when racial and social changes were making American history. From the deep South to Chicago and then on to Broadway during the roaring ‘20’s, Show Boat features Magnolia, a young aspiring actress, who eventually goes on to become a major star and the irresistible Ravenal, a gambling rogue who deserts her when his luck runs dry. The show tells the stories of the performers, stagehands and dockworkers on the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat. Resonating with South Africa’s history, Show Boat deals with the haves and have-nots, the arrogance of the advantaged and their ignorance of poverty as well as racial discrimination and the historic fact that while change improves the lives of some, it usually passes by those who need it most.

Since its South African premiere in 2005, Cape Town Opera’s production of Show Boat has enjoyed several triumphant seasons at home and abroad.  In collaboration with Cape Town Opera, the Wales Millennium Centre presents its first UK tour of Show Boat featuring an all-South African cast accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra to theatres in Birmingham, Manchester and Dublin. This tour is an extension of the strong business relationship between Cape Town Opera and the Wales Millennium Centre and for local performers, a wonderful opportunity to showcase South Africa’s wealth of talent.

Show Boat is a winner wherever it tours and with only a weekend of Cape Town performances before touring the UK, musical theatre enthusiasts are encouraged to book soon at Computicket. JOHN NEWMAN CONFIRMS STELLAR LOCAL LINEUP

JOHN NEWMAN

CONFIRMS STELLAR

 LOCAL LINEUP

Virgin Mobile, 5FM and Seed Experiences are excited to announce the local lineup that will support UK modern soul sensation, John Newman, when he tours South Africa for the first time later this month. ISO will be performing in Cape Town and Beatenberg in Joburg alongside the four-time BRIT Award nominee.

John Newman’s smash hit singles ‘Losing Sleep’, ‘Love Me Again’ and ‘Cheating’ have been on high rotation on 5FM and around the country, and fans are eagerly anticipating what promises to be a sizzling, roaring, swinging concert experience.

Having just released their new EP ‘Passages’, ISO will perform an extra special set, which fits the “big sound, big style”  theme of the concert at the Good Hope Centre. “John Newman is an inspiration to us and it’s such an honour to open for him. It’s always a pleasure to see a musician of such a young age do such great things in the music industry. We can’t wait!” says Richard Brokensha, front man for ISODJ Honey Bee will complement ISO and John Newman with their electro-swing beats throughout the evening.

In Joburg, Beatenberg will bring their smooth performance along with their smash hit track, ‘Pluto(Remember You)’ which has taken the country by storm  reaching #1 across the airwaves. These local favourites will be complimented by swing-master DJ Michael Lesar who will be on the decks throughout the night playing his blend of swing-based beats for the audience to jive to!

Through events like John Newman Live and the upcoming Sonar Cape Town in December this year, Seed Experiences aims to revive Cape Town’s iconic Good Hope Centre to be an epicenter of music and entertainment in the city. The venue will be transformed into what can only be described as a landscape of glitz and glamour for the concert. Newtown’s Town Hall Lane, known best for its street-culture inspired artwork, will take on a vintage flair, transporting the audience right back to the swing era, while still maintaining the edge of downtown Joburg.

John Newman’s live performance has been regarded as one of the best visual shows in the world at the moment. As with every Seed Experiences event, the production on the night will be world class and will offer fans of this new voice of modern soul an extraordinary night of hit music, stunning visual effects and the most swinging party.

Dress the part, get your swing on and prepare to be mesmerised by John Newman live in concert, presented by Virgin Mobile, powered by 5FM.
